Personal Statement
Little Acorns is run by myself (Mel) and my daughter (Annie) O’Kane. I have been a primary school teacher for 30 years and was a SENDCo for 22 years and a Deputy Head Teacher for 11 years. I am passionate about creative and active learning both indoors and outdoors. I have a child centred approach and nurture children’s skills through exploration, discovery, role play, imaginative play, and creativity.
Annie (Cache L3 Award) has supported teaching and learning in the primary school. She has been a classroom Teaching Assistant and Learning Support Assistant for 7 years and has a wide range of experience supporting reading, phonics, and a range of learning needs. She nurtures learning through multi-sensory experiences.

Dave O’Kane my husband is a Forest Play champion (L3 Forest School Practioner) and he can often be found down in the woods at the bottom of the garden, building dens and looking for bugs! Tom O’Kane often comes to visit the home when he is not working from his own house. He comes down to talk about dinosaurs and other interest with our kids who are already playing here. We have a member of the family who speaks Spanish fluently too.
We are committed to providing an exciting, fun, friendly and safe environment for the children in our care. We will provide stimulating learning opportunities that reflect their age and development through quality play and experiences. Each child is unique and to be valued, and we will treat them with care, empathy, and respect. We provide a nutritious and balanced diet, encouraging the children to make healthy food choices and to make and try new things.

Working in partnership with parents we welcome discussion and ideas and encourage parents to provide us with comments and suggestions when they have time. We run Little Acorns professionally, attending training opportunities, respecting confidentiality, and keeping organised records in accordance with current guidelines. We have clear policies and procedures and we are committed to providing a reliable service that parents can depend on and in which they can place their confidence. We look forward to getting to know your children and working with you.
