Little Acorns Severe Weather
The Severe Weather covers all conditions such as snow, ice, floods, gale force winds and other extreme weather. This could impact on journeys buy foot, road or public transport. It also impact on the prevision that is provided at the setting e.g. playing outside.
If we do go out in the car and the weather conditions change, we will make sure to stop in a safe place e.g. layby or car park to wait until the conditions improve. We will use this time to contact you buy, WhatsApp, Text Messages or Ring you. At Little Acorns, we will not leave the children alone and we will make sure to carrying blankets, coats, shoes, spear clothes, drinks, snacks in the car.
- Collecting children – We should be able to collect children from school, being so close and being able to walk. What will make this dangerous for both children and adults is if the path on the hill and the side roads are fully covered in ice and are not gritted therefore, presenting a fall hazard. We are also mindful of the slope on the path in Lagham Road. The school road, Hunters Chase, is much flatter and safer to walk on in poor conditions. Lagham Park is a long slope often ice covered. We will talk with you to make a arrangement that are safe for all parties.
If parents cannot be contacted we will follow our emergency procedure.

- Footwear – If children’s shoes or boats do not have soles suitable for severe weather conditions, they might fall more than usual during outings, garden play etc. Parents are responsible buy ensuring the children’s footwear is suitable for the weather conditions. If a child has an accident, we will follow our ‘Accident, Incident and Emergency Procedure’.
- Our driveway and local roads – Our drive and road outside of the house can be slippery which cause users to fall. We can’t go out side to make sure the drive and the road is safe during the day because we will be looking after the children. It will get slippery through out the day, so we recommend parents wear suitable footwear at drop and pick up times of the day. You should take extra care when walking around near our drive and the road. If the road is to icey to drive down you could leave your car at the top of the road to walk down.
- Closing of the setting – If advised by police or other bodies, we will have to close out setting, we will follow advice and make every effect to keep parents up to date at all times. If the weather conditions become severe whilst the children are at Little Acorns, we will contact parents with plenty of notice so that they can collect their children before the conditions deteriorate.
- Late arrival of parents during severe weather – If parents are delayed by cold or bad weather, they must inform us as soon as possible on WhatsApp and Text Message. The parents need to keep us updated about their journey. Their child will be kept safe and reassured during this time.
- Hypothermia – When children are playing outside in the garden, we will make sure that they wear appropriate clothing to keep them warm and to encourage them to keep moving around. If we at Little Acorns think it is not safe to go out with the children, we ill stay indoors. If a child appears to be reacting to the cold (Blue Lips, uncontrollable shivering etc), we will bring them inside, warm them up gently using hot/warm drinks and blankets, also seek medical advice. We will make every effect to contact the parents as soon as the child’s conditions has stabilised – the child must be out first priority.
